This week in the news a story broke about a rise in the number of girls who face serious emotional issues. The female youth of today, our future sisterhood, are plagued with emotional baggage that they're just not equipped to handle.
If we cast our minds back to when we were teenagers, do you remember how even the slightest issue used to feel like the world was ending?
"Young people tell us they feel enormous pressures today ranging from bullying, the 24/7 online environment and sexual pressures to issues around body image, school stress and family breakdown. - Sarah Brennan, of the charity YoungMinds,
What concerns me is that the issues girls are having are still centred around their body image, and the sexualisation of women. Girls, no matter what their age, should focus on who they are, not what the media depicts they should look like, who they should be, or how sexual they should be.
Please believe me (and I know you've heard this before) but there is plenty of time to worry about that stuff, and it does get easier as you get older. Focus on being comfortable in your own skin, loving what you have, and embracing all your flaws. Every female on this planet has things about themselves they want to change: bigger boobs, smaller boobs, taller, shorter, curly hair, straight hair, less fat, more fat, smaller nose, bigger nose, more sexual partners, less sexual partners, more friends, better grades, the list is endless...
Don't be in a hurry to grow up, these things don't change as we get older, we just become better equipped to handle them as our emotional side develops. Right now, young girls should embrace their youth. The one thing you cannot change is the amount of time that has passed - the clocks are always turning and no amount of worrying will change that (no amount of worrying will change anything).
Please stop comparing yourself to others, and know that you are amazing just the way you are. You are beautiful, you are sexy, you are special, you are loved.
